Vegan Vanilla Milkshake

Plant based shakes are beautiful, indulgent, and delicious. Plus, as a bonus, they are healthier than traditional milkshakes that are loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol! Add more milk for thinner shakes and less if you like them thick.

Maca powder, a root that belongs to the radish family, is most commonly available in powder form. Maca powder has some amazing health benefits due to its rich content of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It will increase your energy level if taken for a few days and it supplies iron and helps restore red blood cells. And it adds a little extra taste to the milkshake.

Two Color Smoothie

This smoothie looks very appealing to kids. I like to serve the drinks with spoons as well as straws because my children like to mix the different colors together and admire the colorful swirls. I like to add the “superfood” Spirulina, which is a microscopic blue-green algae and is a great source of chlorophyll, vitamin B12, vitamin K, vitamin A and antioxidants.

Strawberry, Spinach and Banana Smoothie

Spinach is rich in iron, specifically in nonheme iron. Diet provides two forms of iron: heme and noontime. Nonheme iron is supplied by plants and heme iron is made from haemoglobin and is found in animal flesh. Heme iron is absorbed better but more of something is not always better. A high blood level of stored iron has been associated with increased insulin resistance and heart disease. To enhance iron absorption from plants, include a source of vitamin C with your nonheme- iron rich food. For example, in this recipe I paired strawberries with spinach. Another good example would be adding tomatoes to your spinach salad.

Plant foods that contain a lot of iron are in descending order: Kombu, tofu, dulse, soybeans, dark chocolate, nori, blackstrap molasses, lentils, spinach and tahini.

Strawberry Maca Smoothie

When strawberries are in season we drive to a nearby organic strawberry field and pick them ourselves. I like to freeze as many as possible for the strawberry- free months to come.

Refreshing Green Juice

Juices are very easy to make as long as you don’t mind cleaning up the juicer afterwards. Juices and smoothies have been very trendy for some time but keep in mind that nothing is better than eating the whole fruits and vegetables. Juicing eliminates most of the important fiber and smoothies are usually loaded with sweetness. On and off though, these drinks provide you with a lot of micro nutrients wrapped up in a delicious drink. Green juices are especially refreshing drinks.

You might think that I used Photoshop to intensify the green color of the juice..well, I didn’t. It has the most beautiful natural green.

Powerful Golden Chai

Chai tea boasts amazing health benefits. Each ingredient has unique properties:

Turmeric is a very potent anti- inflammatory and a very powerful antioxidant. It is said to help ward off Alzheimers and reduce the risk of cancer. But don’t just start eating turmeric by the spoonful- it surely has some amazing properties, but I don’t think there’s one magic bullet that’s going to fix everything. It’s a whole orchestra of ingredients that will give you the most benefits.

Cinnamon is a spice that is made from the inner bark of trees called Cinnamomum. Cinnamon is loaded with powerful antioxidants, such as polyphenols and is a strong anti-inflammatory. Cinnamon increases sensitivity to the hormone insulin, it lowers blood sugar levels and has an anti-diabetic effect. Cinnamon has beneficial effects on neurodegenerative diseases. Two compounds found in cinnamon appear to inhibit the buildup of a protein called tau in the brain, which is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. Cinnamon has also been widely studied for its potential use in cancer prevention and treatment.

Ginger is among the healthiest (and most delicious) spices on the planet. It is loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that have powerful benefits for your body and brain.

Manuka honey, produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush, is one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey in the world. The curative properties of honey have been known to indigenous cultures for thousands of years, and dressing wounds with honey was common before the advent of antibiotics. New Zealand’s Maori were the first to identify the healing properties of manuka and some of their remedies and tonics are still used today. Manuka honey has an antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral component that sets it apart from other honeys. This activity is stable and doesn’t lose its potency when exposed to dilution, heat or light. Active manuka honey has stronger properties than regular manuka honey.

Which manuka honey to buy: The UMF grading system appraises natural markers found in Manuka honey, and assures purity & quality. To receive a UMF® grading, a honey must have the presence of DHA (dihydroxyacetone), Methylglyoxal, and Leptosperin. The UMF® rating is a measure of the attributes and values that make up Manuka honey, and assures purity & quality. The higher the grade, the more potent the honey.

Cloves are renowned for providing their uniquely warm, sweet and aromatic taste. Clove contains significant amounts of an active component called eugenol, which is responsible for its anti-inflammatory properties. Cloves are also an excellent source of manganese, a very good source of vitamin K and dietary fiber, and a good source of iron, magnesium, and calcium.

Known as a popular spice around the world, nutmeg also has antibacterial properties,  alleviates pain, helps eliminate fatigue and stress and improves digestion.

Plant-based Eggnog

Eggnog is a popular drink during the holidays. Traditional eggnog is made of milk or cream, sugar, raw eggs, an alcoholic spirit and spices. It makes you wonder: How did humans first think downing a spiced and spiked egg-yolk-milk mixture was a good idea? Anyway, as you might expect, we’ll make our own plant-based version of eggnogis- virgin for the kids, strong for the parents :).

IMG_0080

The first president of the United States, George Washington, was quite a fan of eggnog and devised his own recipe that included rye whiskey, rum and sherry. It was reputed to be a stiff drink that only the most courageous were willing to try.

For my version of eggnog you don’t have to be courageous at all 🙂 Just enjoy it!
