Grocer & Grind Inspired Juice

Once again, I am sitting on the floor at our daughter’s ballet school, using her one hour “body conditioning” class to do something productive that will light up my day. On some days, I go for a run and on other days I am just craving for a late afternoon tea at a cozy cafe. Unfortunately, here on the Gold Coast, the cafes close usually between 3 or 4pm. Way too early for me! Actually, way too early for every one! Therefore, the floor of the ballet school will have to do for today as it is too dark for a jog in the park (don’t forget that we are south of the equator and winter is approaching fast). For the past two days, I have tried to post a truly delicious juice recipe that I made recently but things have been really crazy and just now I am able to write my post.

A few days ago, I had the best morning with my husband- instead of being at work, we had breakfast together- lately, that has been a really rare occasion. We used to go bike riding together quite a lot, but he has been swamped with work lately and there is sadly to more “alone time” for us. So breakfast together was a big deal and I chose the location carefully- the cafe had to be organic with at least some vegan options.
So we ended up at “Grocer and Grind”.


And what options they had! I was in plant- based heaven… and the yellowish/ greenish juice that we had was amazing. I loved the combination of pineapple and fennel. Particularly my husband is a big fan of fennel- whether it is roasted, shaved in a salad or- apparently- as part of a juice.


Fennel has an esteemed reputation in many European cultures, which dates back to the earliest times. Greek myths state that fennel was not only closely associated with Dionysus, the Greek god of food and wine, but that a fennel stalk carried the coal that passed down knowledge from the gods to men…the ancient Greeks always had a very vivid imagination, didn’t they?

Fennel belongs to the Umbellifereae family and is therefore closely related to parsley, carrots, dill and coriander. Fennel contains its own unique combination of phytonutrients that give it strong antioxidant activity.


The most fascinating phytonutrient compound in fennel, however, may be anethole.


It has repeatedly been shown to reduce inflammation and to help prevent the occurrence of cancer. Researchers have also proposed a biological mechanism that may explain these anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects. This mechanism involves the shutting down of a intercellular signaling system called tumor necrosis factor (or TNF)-mediated signaling. By shutting down this signaling process, the anethole in fennel prevents activation of a potentially strong gene-altering and inflammation-triggering molecule called NF-kappaB. The volatile oil has also been shown to be able to protect the liver of experimental animals from toxic chemical injury. 

In addition to its unusual phytonutrients, fennel bulb is an excellent source of Vitamin C, which is able to neutralize free radicals in all aqueous environments of the body. Fennel is also a very good source of fiber, folate and potassium. 

But enough of the nutritional information- let’s taste the juice!!

But still remember- juices are lacking mot of the fruits/ vegetables precious fiber… and they can contain a lot of natural sugars. You can easily drink an 8 ounce glass of freshly squeezed apple juice but it would probably be difficult to eat 3-4 apples in the same go. P.S. As much as we loved the juice, my husband and I shared ONE- but we didn’t share our almond lattes…THAT, I would never do!
